A new composite deck and Pella patio door for a Roland, Iowa home — built to replace mowing with usable outdoor space.
The homeowners in Roland wanted to get more out of their backyard. Less lawn to maintain. More space to actually use. The solution: tear out the old setup, replace the back entry with a new Pella sliding patio door, and build a full composite deck off the back of the house.
We started from scratch — laid out the footprint, dug and set the piers, and framed the structure with treated lumber.
One detail we don't skip: joist tape on every joist top before the decking goes down. It protects the framing from water that works its way through the boards, which extends the life of the structure significantly. It's a small thing that most people never see — and that's exactly why we do it.
The decking is composite in a charcoal gray, with a dark fascia board wrapping the perimeter and white vinyl railing throughout. Wide stairs off the front give easy access to the yard.
The patio door swap happened alongside the deck build. The new Pella slider cleaned up the back entry and ties into the deck naturally — step out the door, you're on the deck.
The finished space gave the homeowners exactly what they were after: a low-maintenance outdoor area that actually invites you outside, without adding more to mow around.
